How To Fix Oven That Is Not Cooking Evenly

man fixing ovenYou must have taken every possible precaution to make sure your food is evenly cooked in the oven. You must have followed the cooking instructions and preheated the oven, yet some parts of the food are still raw while others are overcooked. This happens because the oven is unable to distribute heat evenly.

Before you call an oven service technician for oven repairs, here are some of the things you can do to troubleshoot the problem.

Need to troubleshoot your oven? Take a look at these:

  1. Check Machine Calibration
  2. Check for Hot Spots
  3. Bake
  4. Make a Toast
  5. Test using Chicken

So what should you do next once you have identified the problem?

Check Machine Calibration

If the edges of the dish are overcooked and the center is still uncooked, it indicates that the home appliance is not calibrated properly. This problem may be due to the mismatch of internal temperature and the temperature you have set. For instance, if you set to house appliance to heat to 300 degree Fahrenheit, it may heat closer to 350 or even 400 degrees Fahrenheit. This prevents the food from getting cooked evenly.

This problem can be easily fixed by recalibrating the appliance.

Check for Hot Spots

At times, recalibrating the machine may not be enough to troubleshoot the problem. You may have to check how the household appliance is cooking. This can be tested without any special equipment.

Bake

Try baking a cake in your residential appliance. If the cake is unevenly cooked, there is a problem with the machine. The limitation of this test is that it only confirms there is a problem. It does not tell you how the machine is cooking and will not be able to identify the hot spot.

Make a Toast

Take a loaf of bread and cut it into small pieces. Spread these pieces evenly on the racks. Once the bread is cooked, check the breads for uneven browning. This will help you in identifying the hot spots and take steps to repair or service the appliance. You can also perform this test using croissants or biscuits.

Test using Chicken

You can use a whole chicken to identify the hot spots in your machine. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and cook the chicken for about an hour and 30 minutes. Put a thermal probe on both sides of the chicken to check it the desired temperature is reached. If one side cooks faster than the other side it means there is a problem with one of the sides.

So what should you do next?

Once you have identified the problem area, you must identify which part is responsible for the problem.

Faulty broil or bake element

A problem in the broil or bake element can cause uneven heating. Visual inspection of the elements can help you troubleshoot the problem. If the broil or bake element do not emit heat when turned on, it is time to replace them. Elements that are burned out or faulty must be replaced immediately to prevent further damage to the machine.

Problem with Temperature Sensorman thinking of oven issues

Regular use of the machine can wear out the sensor. You can check the condition of the sensor using an ohmmeter. When the temperature inside the machine rises, the resistance of the sensor should increase. If the sensor is faulty, it is best to get help from an oven repairman. The stove or oven technician will visit your place to replace the faulty sensor and will check the condition of other components that can be responsible for the problem with your machine.
